Stuarts Draft’s history dates back to the early 18th century when William Beverly, an influential landowner, and politician, received a land grant for 118,000 acres in what became Augusta County. He sold parcels to the settlers, which one area became Stuarts Draft. The town was named after the Stuarts, a prominent Scottish family with ties to the Beverley family, and “Draft,” a natural watercourse that runs through the town. The fertile soil and abundant water resources in the area attracted European settlers, who established farms and mills, contributing to the growth and development of the town.
